Smell that Durian!!!

Just discovered dishes @Yum Cha that made my mouth water... Le Chef V agreed that the durian roll was delicious... and the pungent smell did not put us off one bit...
although the Squid fried in oats batter did not flutter our heart too much it was still a good bite...
All in all the dim sum buffet did made us a tad heavier...

well... its still 2006... there is still time to stick to my new year's resolution to lose weight... :P

the main feature of the entire meal!!... pizza ala shawnnario (aptly christianed by Le Chef's executive assitant)...
but i mus say.... despite all the elaborate & painstaking arrangement of the ingredients... they simply melted into a lump... BUT... the executive chef claims that the arrangement aids the taste of the dish... haha.... although i do not totally disagree...

this dish is the Asparagus Wraps & Pumpkin Skewer....
delicious.... but in great shortage.... (*Hint Hint*)
we had to fight for extras... & the executive chef fought with me too!!!
*tsk tsk* i thought the chef never eats her creation???

Pork Sausage SAU..... not SOW hor....
okie... no need to guess what this dish is.... actually meant to satisfy little J... its ended mostly in our tummies cuz he decided that it was too spicy for his liking....
guess we did not do a good job hoodwinking him.

salad.... Yum... yet again.... little J turned up his nose on the chick peas....
humph... nothing satisfies him.....

LIttle J's Big "Chinese Speech & Drama" Day 21st Dec

It ws such a proud day for little J. His very first Chinese Speech & Drama Performance. This time he was to assume the role of a cute little dog.

Its clear to all the kids that this was to be a fun performance. There was more chitter, chatter then the songs they were supposed to sing. Who can blame these little munchkins.... it was pure excitement to have flashblubs going off all around them.

My little J was bubbling over i could tell but kept his cool cuz he probably felt that jumping around would not be a "cool" thing.... Hey he is growing up fast.

Its a pity that i am having some difficulty uploading the videos i took, so these photos will have to do for now.....

the awfully sinful chocolate cake... i just have to share it....

I realise it is half eaten... but it was really way too sweet
Little J took a couple of bites then it was for me to finish.
i couldn't stomach more than a bite and my eyes wandered around our table...

Well... i spotted the menu behind our table number (tsk tsk... u resturant savvy one would be able to know where i was satisfying my tastebuds...)
the menu pic of the cake isn't too clear but i guess it leaves little to the imagination...

Someone asked me today if I ever contemplated the issues of life and death…
Yes of course I have!
What a preposterous question.

Just this week, I am celebrating the life of a new addition to our family and very once so often I glance at the lives I see as miracles in my own nuclear family.

Even as I watch the opening ceremony of the DOHA GAMES, as the iconic Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man (done up in abstract metal) flashes on screen, it allows for further contemplation.

Many would say… hey LynLing…. Don’t be so melancholic, its but an opening performance.
Yes I know that, but it really leaves me wondering if the rest of the world understands the undertones that resonate from the performances put up?
Do the performers themselves know the significance of that grand opening performance?
The DOHA GAMES serves to bring closer to us the significance of the interdependence of Man & his constant drive to destroy all that has been achieved in our lifetime.
The beauty of modern science and technology only tells us that perhaps Man should be humbled and not make sport of the power it yields.

Back to the root question at hand…

Life…
it provides a multitude of opportunities yet at the same time as “it giveth… it also takes away”.
Strange… but how true… recalling the ground-breaking events that has rocked the world so far…
9-11… the Tsunami Crisis… the terrorist bomb attacks that shook the world…
We have at the turn of the century, saw Life as promising, moving ahead at a pace we never have imagined.
Yet on hindsight, we have been humbled…. Very humbled….
Suddenly shook up to the possibility that Man is vulnerable after all.
How sad….

Death…
There are people of make sport of juncture of our lives too.
The way they end it at will without consideration of the repercussions that their decisions might bring.
Even more worrying is the up-trend of people who treat incepted life as cheap… choosing infanticide and abortion as avenues to rid themselves of problems they never planned to have…
So sad…

Every once so often we lament the lack of family-ness, a lack of kids, a lack of warmth. Perhaps what we need to realize is that this idea likely manifested itself from the society’s expectations of success.
Many traditional thinking parents compare and all of a sudden, the ‘small, single income family’ is no longer sufficient to meet needs.
Why have kids some ask?
To them its merely an added burden to the already shrinking income pool.
But the joys that kids bring….. is just ‘priceless’ (to quote MasterCard on that). Ironic but true. We actually need the most materialistic plastic in our society to tell us what is priceless.
What a laugh!

Lottery win. Everybody’s dream. Or is it really?

Watching the film brings a great deal of insight into the feelings that many of us refuse to surface.
The cut throat rat race for the paper qualification and the stigma of not having one, or even one that is less than desired.
University from Idaho? Polytechnic? Never heard of! That was what Seng one of the protagonist in the film had to grapple with. Even worse, he did not complete his studies!
The gender comparison also mirrors some of the traditional, patriarchal thinking that we pretend do not exist. Male being more important than that of a female – what happened to competent, intelligent and filial daughters? Don’t they count for something too?
The ancient school of thought should look like this:

* male over female.
* education & qualification over a lack of it.
* traditionally respected job types over the less-than-desired job types.
* dollar wealth
* having the 5Cs vs having none

All these issues were delicately treated in the film and for the sob-softies, this film can sometimes jerk a tear or two.

Even with the wealth, it makes us wonder if money is really the solve-all element that we need in our lives. Maybe not.
Some sideline issues also crept its way into the plot. What with horrible, welfare-deprived bosses and maid treatment, the exaggerated knee-jerk effects only magnify some of the real issues that we face, on this island, on a daily basis.

It is amazing the lengths that people will do for that extra dollar.

Can we blame our DreamCity for the numerous souls that are "sold" each day?

As we watch episode after episode of the finer side of life, we can't help but realise that the Singapore Dream is not for the faint hearted. Unless of course, envying the many millionaires that are turned out, should be a sideline affair. We should leave the enjoyment to the priviledged and slog from the sidelines.

Its disgusting sometimes when few can splurge on thousands like small change, when the common us count pennies.
But... Hey.... it's just the green-eyed disease that i'm afflicted with.
